Steps to Join the U.S. Air Force
Step 1: Learn about the military
Find out abut the military. Ask questions about careers, lifestyle, benefits, and pay.
Find out if you are eligible. The Air Force does have standards that must be met in order to enlist.
Step 2 Choose the right path
Decide between full and part time. What path is best for you; enlisted, officer, or healthcare. Consider the career opportunities in each area.
Step 3 Talk to a Recruiter
Talking to an Air Force Recruiter is a good opportunity to ask specific questions that relate to your situation. Only by working with a Recruiter can you decide if the Air Force experience will help you meet your goals, wants and needs.
Step 4: Ace the ASVAB
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a multiple-choice test designed to evaluate your skills in ten areas. Your ASVAB score is a critical part of determining your Air Force career path. Every career field does in fact require more that just an overall ASVAB qualifying score which is a 36 if you graduated from High School and a 64 if you have a GED. The ASVAB is broken down into four categories (Mechanical, Administrative, General, and Electronic), and all enlisted career fields have a minimum score requirement that fall under one or more of these categories.
Step 5: Process In - MEPS
Visit one of the network of 65 MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Stations) located nationwide and in Puerto Rico. This is where you go to enlist in the military. Here you will find out if you qualify physically. You will also find out what jobs you are qualified for. Your ASVAB scores, along with the results of your physical examination, will be reviewed when you undergo job counseling during the enlistment process at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS).This is also where you will be raise your right hand and be sworn in to the United States Air Force.
Step 6: Get ready for Bootcamp
You will spend approximately 6 and 1/2 weeks at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. There you will begin your career in the Air Force with Basic Military Training. You'll work hard and be challenged, but we'll be with you every step of the way, as you stretch yourself and discover that you're capable of more than you ever thought possible. And when you're finished, you'll know that you're ready for anything that life can throw at you.
