Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)
Other Army personnel may qualify for the Veterans Educational
Assistance Program, wherein the government matches the individual’s
contribution on a 2 for 1 basis. To be eligible, Army personnel
must have had service for the first time between January 1,
1977 and June 30, 1985, and contributed money to VEAP (or
DOD contributed money) while on active duty. In addition,
personnel must have enrolled in and contributed to VEAP (or
had money contributed for you by DOD) before April 1, 1987.
Other requirements for eligibility include:
served for a continuous period of 181 days or more
discharge or release from service was under conditions
other than dishonorable
completed 24 continuous months of active duty if
enlisted for the first time after September 7, 1980, or entered
active duty as an officer or enlistee after October 16, 1981.
Army personnel may be entitled to receive up to 36 months
of educational benefits. Usually, the number of monthly payments
for full-time training will be the same as the number of months
contributed to VEAP. A maximum of 36 months can be earned
under this program.
