Who Serves in the U.S. Military?
Who serves in the active-duty ranks of the U.S. all-volunteer military? Conventional wisdom holds that military service disproportionately attracts minorities and men and women from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many believe that troops enlist because they have few options, not because they want to serve their country. Others believe that the war in Iraq has forced the military to lower its recruiting standards. Any discussion of troop quality must take place in context. A soldier’s demographic characteristics are of little importance in the military, which values honor, leadership, self-sacrifice, courage, and integrity—qualities that cannot be quantified. Nonetheless, any assessment of the quality of recruits can take place only on the basis of objective criteria. Demographic characteristics are a poor proxy for the quality of those who serve in the armed forces, but they can help to explain which Americans volunteer for military service and why.
Contrary to popular belief it is not the uneducated, the poor, and the minorities who are filling the majority of the ranks of our military. The backbone of American culture is still the backbone of our countries fighting forces. There are many factors as to why people join the military and regardless of the scare tactics used by the anti-military left money is usually not the leading cause. Many of our young men and women want to serve their country like their parents did. Many of our young men and women see the evil in the world and realize that yes someone does have to fight it. There are also those who join for the educational benefits and those who join to see the world but never make the mistake of assuming that our fighting men and women are not the best that our country has to offer. I would put them up against any college student any day when it comes to loyalty, integrity, and perseverance. Why did you join the military?

false, look at where the recruiting offices are located. They are not located in rich well to do parts of town, they are located in places where the minority percentage is well above 50% and in place called the "hood" or the "ghetto"
i agree with we the people. all the recruiting stations i have seen are in poor neighborhoods, ghettos or hoods if you will. i am joining in a month to fight and defend my country to bitter end...
will some people are sick and they are stell. I think they should get the docters ok before joining the military.
Not all recruitment is done through the recruitment site unlike "we the people" said. The "ghetto" is most likely is where people chose to live not because they are being forced to (at the end of a gun point or by a city law). The reason why is these are the people who don't actually able to speak English (or some) and they are feeling more comfortable living among the same ethnic group.
Actually these number are now and have been historically true. The draft as first instituted was because the nation was losing to many of the best and brightest and the poor and uneducated were not volunteering. (we are talking WWII) On college campuses many of the students are veterans. And the main reason that recruiting offices are in poorer neighborhoods is because they have been there for years and when they first opened those were not poor neighbors or ghettos. And Justin is correct, most recruiting is direct contact initiated by the recruit. Recruiting offices are just that an office or base of operations for the recruiters to work out of. Most recruiters spend all day on the road talking to people who have contacted them.
The recruiting office are in the "ghettos" as you say, as a service of the federal government. They are there to make it easier for them to enlist. Just like most "ghettos" are close to business districts. People are just looking at the wrong side of the coin....
the millitary is really stating to lower their stantards alot i think they are getting desperate
Kiss my ass, jon. The military's standards have always been high, and the brass would not allow that to change.
I have not joined because I am a senior at high school. I intend to sign up as soon as i graduate.
