The Navy, like all of the U.S. Armed Forces, has them. These are the minimum standards you must meet to enlist. Click on the links below to see the complete list.


AGE REQUIREMENTS

You must be no older than 34 but at least 17 years old. However, if you are not yet 18, you must have parental consent. (The Navy Reserve has slightly different age standards.)

INFORMATION YOU WILL NEED WHEN YOU TALK TO A RECRUITER

  • Birth certificate.
  • Social Security card.
  • High school diploma (and college transcript, if applicable)
  • A list of all places you have worked since your 16th birthday.
  • A list of all police involvement you have had in your entire life (include minor traffic violations).
  • A list of four character references (include phone number and address).
  • A list of all places you have visited outside the United States.
  • If not a U.S. citizen, bring a list specifying the green card numbers and port of entry places and dates for all immediate family members.
  • A list of all medications you are currently on and any medical problems you have had in your entire life.
  • A list of all places where you have lived since your 16th birthday.
 
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Generally speaking, you must meet the high school graduate or high school equivalency requirements to enlist in the Navy.

If  you haven’t met the high school graduate requirements to enlist in the Navy you may qualify under the high school equivalency requirements.


FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS

The Navy takes personal financial responsibility very seriously. In certain cases when you enlist, you have to prove that you can meet your current financial obligations. If you are enlisting at a pay grade less than your monthly financial obligations, contact a recruiter about your eligibility.


DEPENDENT RESTRICTIONS

The Navy will normally not allow you to enlist if you have more than two dependents under the age of 18. Who is considered your dependent? If you have questions, contact a recruiter.

CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS

As a U.S. citizen you may enlist in the Navy (assuming you meet the other enlistment standards). But what if you are a non-citizen? You can still enlist as long as you meet the following requirements: 

  1. Entered the United States on a permanent residence visa or have an Alien Registration Green Card,
  2. Established a bona fide residence
  3. Established a home of record in the United States

For enlistment purposes, citizens of the United States include citizens of the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
